Beautifully Complex
There was a feeling I struggled to explain after becoming a mother.
It wasn’t that I worried more.
Or loved more.
Or became more emotional.
It was that I started listening to myself differently. More.
I became more aware of environments.
More sensitive to tension.
More attuned to risk, emotion, overwhelm, timing, energy, safety.
I could sense when something was “off” even if I couldn’t logically explain why.
Not off for me.
Off for the collective “us.”
In many ways, I still overrode my own needs constantly.
But I would not override my instincts when it came to my child.
It suddenly felt more natural to advocate fiercely for someone else than I had ever done for myself.
At the time, I thought this was purely psychological.
The Maternal Brain
But while diving deeper into the neuroscience of motherhood, I discovered something astonishing:
the maternal brain quite literally reorganizes itself.
Over the past decade, several landmark neuroscience studies have scanned women’s brains before, during, and after pregnancy and found measurable structural and functional changes across regions involved in empathy, emotional processing, social cognition, motivation, caregiving, and understanding the needs of others.
In 2017, researchers led by Elseline Hoekzema published the first major longitudinal MRI study comparing women before and after pregnancy. They found long-lasting changes in gray matter volume in brain regions tied to social cognition and maternal attachment — changes that were still visible years later.
A 2022 follow-up study went further, showing that pregnancy doesn’t simply alter isolated brain regions, but appears to reorganize entire communication networks within the brain, particularly those involved in self-reflection, emotional interpretation, and social processing.
Then in 2024, researchers mapped the maternal brain dynamically across pregnancy itself and found widespread brain remodeling unfolding week by week as hormones shifted — affecting nearly 80% of cortical regions.
And perhaps most fascinatingly, many researchers now argue that what we casually dismiss as “baby brain” may not reflect cognitive decline at all, but rather a recalibration of attention, vigilance, and priorities.
The maternal brain appears to become:
more socially attuned,
more responsive to emotional cues,
more vigilant,
more sensitive to safety, connection, and survival.
Not less intelligent.
Adaptive.
What Matters Now
Recently, while interviewing a mother and leader about parental leave, identity, and work, she told me:
“I feel like I have zero time to waste now, so I’m more ruthless about protecting my time and energy.”
And moments later:
“I feel like becoming a parent made me more intolerant towards people’s bullshit.”
I laughed immediately because I understood exactly what she meant.
Not because motherhood magically changes your personality overnight.
But because your brain has actually reprioritized.
The maternal brain appears to become more attuned to salience:
What matters.
What doesn’t.
What deserves energy.
What feels unnecessary, performative, inefficient, or emotionally draining.
Many women describe this strange shift where they suddenly:
tolerate less noise,
become more protective of their time,
lose interest in perfectionism,
feel less willing to engage in dynamics that once felt normal,
become radically efficient.
And often, they wonder:
Why do I feel so different?
And motherhood is not the only time the female brain transforms.
Later in life, many women experience another profound neurological transition through perimenopause and menopause — as hormones shift, sleep changes, stress sensitivity evolves, and cognitive networks adapt once again.
Beautifully Complex
The more I read, the more I realized how many experiences women carry without language for them.
One of my favorite parts of teaching neuroscience is watching people have those moments of recognition:
“Oh my god. That’s why I feel like that.”
That feeling of suddenly understanding the biology underneath your behaviors, emotions, instincts, and beliefs can be incredibly validating.
